What is your dream life?
If you’re like most people, you probably have at least a vague idea of the life you wish you had. Maybe you dream of living in a pretty cottage with a garden, or making money as a professional artist, or going on adventures all over the world.
In this article, I’m going to teach you the secret to living your dream life RIGHT NOW. Plus, since I always struggle to implement things unless I have a clear action step, I made a free worksheet that will help you start living the life of your dreams TODAY.
First, ask yourself, why do you want the things you want?
I’m willing to bet that the reason you want the things you want, whether that’s a nicer house or more free time, is that you want to feel a certain way.
Guess what? You don’t have to wait to experience those feelings.
Now, I’m all for dreaming big and pushing ourselves to achieve the life we truly want. But something magical happens when you realize you don’t have to wait until you reach a certain milestone to do and feel a certain way.
I want to illustrate this by using a desire that many people dream of: traveling.
Let’s say that your dream life includes lots of traveling. You see pictures of people wandering around Europe and you long to be there too.
(Remember, I’m not saying to abandon your dream of going to Europe. Dream big!)
But think about it: why do you want to travel? What is the feeling that you’re really yearning for?
When I am honest with myself about why I want to travel, the essence of it comes down to this:
“I want to see beautiful places that are new or different to me.”
Why?? I ask myself. My answer might be something like this:
“So that I can experience wonder and excitement. I want to feel like I have the freedom to see new things, so I don’t feel stuck in a rut or trapped within my own four walls.”
If that’s the essence of how I want to feel, why can’t I experience that without traveling to Europe?
The answer is, I CAN.
Am I able to see beautiful places that are new and different to me? Of course! There are hundreds of beautiful places near where I live, most of which I haven’t seen yet.
I could drive an hour to get to the nearest big city, where I could stroll down streets I’ve rarely seen and duck into cute shops I’ve never been to. I could drive 30 minutes to get to the trail of a local hike I haven’t done, where the scenery is continually changing with the seasons of the year.
I could drive 10 minutes and get to a different neighborhood, where the houses are built in a different style from the houses in my development, and the occupants decorate their lawns with flowers and unique mailboxes.
Am I able to feel wonder and excitement about these beautiful places?
Absolutely! That is a choice that is made by ME, and it’s not dependent on my outside circumstances.
You can feel the same feelings of wonder and freedom that you feel while traveling (or that you imagine that you’d feel while traveling) wherever you are.
Seek out new sights in your hometown. Try out a new restaurant. Go on a walk at sunrise or sunset (times of the day when it is very easy to feel wonder).
This doesn’t mean that you have to give up your goals of traveling, if that’s what you dream about. Enjoying the little things you do in your everyday life will not take away from the experience of traveling one bit. In fact, it will probably make your future travels even more wonderful, because you’ve trained yourself to find joy wherever you are.
I cannot emphasize this enough:
You can feel the same feelings you will feel when you have your dream life (or the same feelings that you imagine you would feel) RIGHT NOW.
And honestly, a lot of times, you can do the same things you would be doing if you had your dream life.
Personally, I dream of living in the English countryside. Why? Well, one reason is so that I can wake up in the morning and take walks in the morning air, admiring the cottages and gazing at the sheep and cows in the meadows.
So, I ask myself: if I dream about taking morning walks and admiring my neighborhood, why can’t I do that now?
The answer, once again, is I can!
So, what are some elements of your dream life?
Do you dream of a nicer house? A job that you love? Kids that behave perfectly?
You dream of those things because you believe that they’ll make you feel a certain way. But what can you do to feel that way now?
I made a free worksheet to help you identify why you want the things you want, and what you can do NOW so that you feel like you’re living your dream life.
Get the worksheet here. (Link will open in new tab. You don’t have to sign up for anything, just grab it and start your journey! There’s an example page, plus 3 pages so that you can explore 3 different elements of your dream life.)
Once again, I absolutely believe that you should dream big and then go for those dreams! All I’m saying is, you don’t have to wait to experience at least a piece of that dream life RIGHT NOW.
Experience your dreams now. You deserve it! 🙂
Best of luck!
